Chapter 93

RIVAN SARAF’S DEMEANOR UPON HEARING AMIL’S REPORT WAS SUBDUED. “A deathbed vigil is always an unhappy enterprise. Are you and your friend going to be able to do this again?”

“I think so.”

“You sound uncertain.”

“Aja started crying, and I didn’t know what to feel.” Amil pushed his ears back. “I don’t have experience with that kind of loss.”

“Did you tell her this?”

“No.”

“Talk to her. Explain who you are.” Rivan fiddled with an art object on his desk. “Her last name is Revata? Why does that sound like ‘Ravati’?”

“It might be coincidental.” Amil cracked a smile. “Revata is a common name in the Islands, but it’s not AjDazani. We have an expression — ‘Raji Limar in the toolshed’.”

“Don’t tell her that.”

“Too late.”

“Are you going to court this girl?”

Amil made big eyes. “Maybe.”

“I don’t think that’s how it’s done.” His teacher frowned. “I need you to brief me on how the Soul Camera works.”

“It’ll take an hour.”

“I’ll call you tomorrow. Where are you on safety certification.”

“Tissue samples from Hiryana-Ji are in the lab. I’m doing an animal study this afternoon.”

“You haven’t stood in front of this thing yourself, have you?”

“I will — eventually.”

“Don’t do anything even remotely like that until I clear it.”

“Yes sir.” Amil coughed. “Van, can we speak as friends for a minute.”

Rivan gave him a look. “Sure, we can — we always can.”

“People are saying I’m your apprentice.” He slid down in the chair, looking at his feet. “And it makes me worry that I’m disloyal for not interviewing with Parsanda Research.”

Rivan held up a hand. “Uwa! My fault — we should have talked about this before.” He tapped the desk. “You are my apprentice, and I expect you’ll be my successor, but that doesn’t mean you have to work for my company. In fact, it’s better if you don’t.”

Amil dragged claws through his mane. “What a relief!” He looked up. “I’ve had my head down for so long, I haven’t taken time to think about these things.”

“Don’t worry about it. I don’t own the business by myself and it could be awkward to have you go there. Open your own shop — it’s fine.”

“Thanks. I’m glad we’re okay.”

“We’re more than okay. I like Vaga, by the way.”

“He’s shy until you get to know him.”

“You’re doing the same thing I did.”

“Ha?”

“Partnering with a maker of things — it’s a perfect match for a theorist. You’ll go far with that arrangement, but just be aware it’s a lot like marriage.”

“I’ll keep that in mind.” Amil wrinkled his nose. “By the way — why is IntSec sending us guard drones?”

“Because you’re starting to get noticed.”
